Dr. Ulysses Balis is a Professor of Pathology at the University of Michigan and Director of the Division of Pathology Informatics within the Department of Pathology. A board-certified Pathology Informaticist, he focuses on the intersection of computational approaches and medical practice. His division is one of the few academic IT divisions housed within a pathology department.
Dr. Balis leads NIH R01-supported research in pathology and medical informatics, including machine learning, image-based analytics, and federated data architectures. These initiatives support a pathology informatics fellowship, one of only five such programs in the U.S. He is also an advocate for pathology informatics education, serving on the Clinical Informatics Subspecialty Boards Exam Committee.
With over 100 publications and multiple patents, Dr. Balis is co-editor of a text on Pathology Informatics and has delivered more than 180 invited presentations globally on topics like image analysis and data analytics.
