Dr. Colin Doherty is the Head of School of Medicine and holds the Ellen Mayston Bates Chair in Epileptology at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and is a Consultant Neurologist and Director of the Epilepsy Service at St. James’s Hospital, Dublin. He trained in Medicine and Neurology at UCD, St. Vincent’s, and Beaumont Hospitals before completing his residency and fellowships in Epilepsy and Cognition at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Doherty has published extensively in brain imaging, genetics, and health services research in epilepsy, with 105 peer-reviewed publications and significant contributions to national epilepsy care, including evidence-based pathways and mortality estimates. He has secured over €7 million in collaborative research funding, authored chapters in three textbooks, and co-edited one.
He has held leadership roles in Ireland’s National Clinical Effectiveness Committee, the Health Research Board, and Epilepsy Research Ireland. Internationally, he represents Ireland in the International League Against Epilepsy’s Global Campaign Against Epilepsy and is a co-applicant on EU-funded epilepsy epidemiology research.
